Sponsored Event Series
Might Contain Nuts
In March 2015 Alex took on his first ultra race, 40 hilly miles in the Black Mountains in South Wales organised by Might Contain Nuts ("MCN"). Laura ran the 10 mile event and ended up making friends with the event organisers while she was waiting. By the time Alex had finished, Laura had agreed to become MCN's retail partner and to sponsor the race series. We're very happy to be continuing that relationship in 2016 so you'll see us at each of the 4 rounds through the year. Rounds take place in March, May, September and December and alternate between the Black Mountains and Brecons. Each round offers a choice of 10, 26 or 40 miles and crams as much excitement and challenge as possible into the distance. MCN choose different routes for the rounds to give each its own character, for instance Round 3 is a slightly gentler introduction to the distance with fewer large climbson the ultra. You can find more information and sign up on the Might Contain Nuts site.
Local businesses we work with
A number of local professionals and small businesses have been a real joy to work with - thanks guys! To mention a few:
Anthony Oram / Auxiliary Outside Projects
Ant is a graphic designer who we knew of through mutual friends. He started working with us right at the beginning with DEKA and helped us put our vague ideas into a concrete graphic style that we love. We're very pleased to stock some of his casual outdoors-inspired clothing.
I Dress Myself
I Dress Myself are a small local Frome business run by Pete and Hannah. They do really excellent quality screen printing - art prints, t-shirts etc. We've worked with them many times and they always bring fun to the proceedings. Contact them here: http://idressmyself.co.uk/
Friends, groups, clubs etc.
We've made some good friends through DEKA. Here are a few of the people and groups we're privileged to count among them, all of whom put heart and soul into helping people enjoy running:
Renee is a highly experienced and knowledgeable registered sports and eating disorder specialist dietitian/nutritionist. She's worked with a wide range of athletes including British elite athletes such as Holly Rush and Robbie Britton. She's the author of the extremely successful book Training Food (which you can buy from Deka) and her articles can often be found in top sports publications. Renee has been very supportive of DEKA including giving a fascinating talk on runners' nutrition at our store. If you suspect you could benefit from improving your diet or nutrition (and most people could), you should contact her!
Ira is the author of Fat Man to Green Man: From Unfit to Ultramarathon (which we stock) and a fixture of the Bristol area running scene with a wealth of knowledge he has picked up in the course of his running journey and personal transformation. He's a friend of the shop and has participated in our panel discussion nights. If you're thinking of taking on your first ultra he's a good chap to ask for advice.
Holly is a local athlete who has progressed through world-standard marathon and half-marathon performances to now focus on ultra distance. She has represented Great Britain a number of times and in her first competitive ultra in 2013, the Comrades, came 7th. She's also a qualified personal trainer and sports massage therapist, an ambassador for Asics AND has a full-time job working for England Athletics. Somehow she manages to find time to come and see us every once in a while and we were privileged to benefit from her experience as a guest at a panel discussion night on ultra running we hosted recently. One to follow!
Gordon fixes us and a good number of our friends - whether it's finding the underlying cause to a recurring injury, planning recovery or patching us up before an event he covers the lot. A very talented and knowledgeable local practitioner who we would like to recommend to friends and customers. He is a sports therapist with a Bachelor's Degree in Bio-science & Psychology from the University of Cape Town and a Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Clinical Sports Therapy from the Active Health Group. Gordon is also a Retül University certified bike fitter.
Frome Running Club, coaches Steve Carroll and Nick Cooper
We're active in our local club, Frome Running Club. They're a particularly friendly, social and supportive club so if you're considering joining but are nervous or have any concerns at all, just give them a try. They have some really fantastic, committed coaches ready to help you on your running journey wherever you are in it and we'd like to particularly shout out to coaches Steve and Nick - you guys rock.
Frome and Country Offroad
This thoroughly informal group "sucked us in" to off-road running and from there to ultra distance. A ragtag bunch that keeps going mainly from the constant efforts of a small core group. Some of our best running experiences have been with this group and we're forever grateful. No link for this one - if you want to join in, you'll have to work out how to contact them yourself!
Like the Wind
Like The Wind is the passion project of Simon and Julie Freeman. It's a running magazine like no other and its origins as a not-for-profit expression of their love for running shine through in the deep story focus, very high production standards, beautiful illustrations and photographs and general lack of dayglo lycra in evidence. They're also lovely people and we've been very happy to stock the magazine from the beginning. If you're thinking about starting running and want some extra motivation, or you've lost your mojo and forgotten why you're doing this sport, or you're so obsessed with running that when you're not running you'd like to be reading about running - come to the shop and pick up a copy (and any previous issues you're missing!).
Dave's a fascinating chap, full of stories and with a penchant for organising really long races that are in our neck of the woods. He also wrote a great running book, Everything Will Work Out in the Long Run - you can pick that up in-store.
